About
A directory built for people who visit with curiosity
Collection Atlas maps Australia's independent museums, public galleries, heritage sites, and cultural institutions — the places worth going out of your way for.
How it started
Australia has one of the most interesting and underappreciated cultural landscapes in the world. From major metropolitan institutions to small regional collections, historic homesteads to living museums, the breadth of what exists is extraordinary — and largely invisible to anyone not already in the know.
Most of these places are hard to find. A Google search turns up tourism aggregators, outdated council websites, and promotional content that tells you nothing useful. There was no single place to go if you wanted to plan a weekend around a gallery trail, or find out which heritage sites near Bendigo were actually worth the detour.
Collection Atlas exists to fix that. It is an independent, editorially curated directory of Australian cultural institutions — built not by an algorithm, but by someone who cares about the sector and thinks good places deserve better infrastructure.
What is in the directory
The atlas covers museums, public galleries, heritage sites, botanical gardens, archives, and cultural centres across Australia. Every listing includes location, contact details, and institution type.
Institutions can claim and manage their own listings through the institution portal, adding descriptions, opening hours, images, and upcoming exhibitions.
Editorial approach
The directory is editorially curated. Inclusion is based on a simple standard: does this institution have a genuine public presence and a real reason to visit? Institutions that do not meet that bar are not listed.
Listings are not paid placements. Every institution appears on its own merits. Institutions can claim their listing and enhance it with additional detail, but payment never influences inclusion or ranking.
The discovery trails — editorially curated routes connecting institutions in a region — are selected for their quality, coherence, and usefulness as actual day-trip itineraries.
For institutions
If your institution is listed, you can claim it and take control of your listing — update your description, add photos, post upcoming exhibitions and events, and make sure visitors have accurate information before they arrive.
Basic claiming is free. Premium listings include additional features for institutions that want more visibility on the platform.
