The Story

On the grounds of the Penrith Paceway, west of Sydney, this working museum keeps the craft of letterpress printing alive. Volunteers run the vintage machinery, including a 1936 Heidelberg Cylinder press, a Vandercook Press, Linotype and Ludlow machines, and cases of hand-set metal and wooden type. Visitors can watch demonstrations, see rare books and newspapers on display, and try hand typesetting the way it was done centuries ago. The museum also runs day-long letterpress workshops in typography, poster and Adana printing, and members have contributed printed work to exhibitions at the nearby Lewers Gallery.
