Museum
Old Timers Mine
Coober Pedy, SA, SA
The Story
A family-run attraction built inside a genuine 1916 opal mine, where a self-guided tour takes you underground through the original workings and two dug-out homes fitted out as they were in the 1920s and 1970s. The museum holds the first opal found by 14-year-old Willie Hutchison in 1915, the find that started Coober Pedy, alongside mining lamps and tools, the town's original drive-in projector and a Royal Flying Doctor kit. Noodling pits let you fossick for your own. Open daily.
