When Victoria began closing its psychiatric hospitals in the 1980s, Eric Cunningham Dax — the psychiatrist who had introduced art therapy to them in the 1950s — salvaged around 8,000 works headed for destruction. That rescue became a collection of more than 16,000, one of four of its kind in the world. Two galleries draw on it and show living artists with lived experience of mental health issues.
