The Story

Darwin was bombed in 1942 and Mount Isa assumed it was next. Miners came off eight-hour shifts and put in another four, blasting four timbered tunnels into the hill below the regional hospital in fifteen weeks: wards, surgical theatre, delivery room, all stocked. It was never needed. Nurses slept there after night duty because it was cool. One ticket also covers the Tent House and the matron's medical collection.
